Reverse the 20% reduction in NM veterans' home care rates

Reverse the 20% reduction in NM veterans' home care rates
The Issue
Veterans, the courageous individuals who have selflessly served our nation, deserve the utmost respect and care in their time of need. Unfortunately, a recent reduction in funding targeting the state of New Mexico, has put a significant strain on the well-being of our Veterans in New Mexico. Effective January 1, 2026, a staggering 20% reduction in reimbursement rates for Veterans' home care services is set to take effect. This unilateral decision directly impacts the livelihoods of countless Veterans, their families, and community care partners across New Mexico.
Home care services are instrumental in providing personalized, compassionate, and efficient care for Veterans who face challenges due to physical or mental health issues related to their service. These services directly reduce hospitalizations and long term placement. A reduction in reimbursement rates threatens the accessibility and quality of care for these deserving individuals. Many Veterans are disabled and depend heavily on these services to maintain their independence and quality of life. Without adequate funding, community care partners will struggle to sustain operations, leading to potential closures or diminished capacity to provide necessary care. This will leave thousands of New Mexico Veterans without necessary in home care that they rely and depend upon to remain in their homes.
Statistics underscore the critical need for these services. According to a 2021 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, New Mexico is home to over 146,000 Veterans, many of whom may require assistance due to age or disabilities related to their service. Furthermore, the Department of Veterans Affairs has highlighted a growing demand for home care services as our Veteran population continues to age. Cutting reimbursement rates by 20% only serves to exacerbate these challenges and undermine our commitment to those who have dedicated their lives to our safety and freedom.
New Mexico is the only state in the nation where VA home care rates for Veterans have been cut, by a staggering 20%, while all other states either remained the same or received increases, other than one area of Texas. New Mexico is already in a healthcare crisis. Over 90% of our counties are designated Health Professional Shortage Areas, with especially severe shortages in rural and Tribal communities. Home health care in New Mexico is already among the most expensive in the nation due to high wages, rural travel costs, and the state’s large population of disabled Veterans who rely on these services to remain safe and independent. Cutting home care funding in one of the most underserved states will leave thousands of Veterans without essential care.
We urge the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Albuquerque VA Medical Center, and our elected federal and state officials to act swiftly to reverse this decision. Restoring reimbursement rates is crucial to ensure that our Veterans receive the care they rightfully deserve and to support community care partners dedicated to providing these essential services. By reinstating these funds, we can safeguard the health and dignity of Veterans across New Mexico.
Sign this petition to demand immediate action and protect the welfare of our Veterans. Let's honor their sacrifice by standing up for their rights to quality home care. Every signature makes a difference in showing our unwavering support for those who have bravely served our nation.
