Reverse Streatham Wells LTN Trial for a Comprehensive Traffic Reduction Plan

Reverse Streatham Wells LTN Trial for a Comprehensive Traffic Reduction Plan
The Issue
I am a resident of Streatham, London, a mother to a school child, and like many others in our community, I yearn for safer roads, less pollution, and more feasible cycling conditions. The current lack of cycle lanes, single-way traffic roads, and safe bicycle storage makes it challenging for us to choose environmentally friendly transportation options. Equally, the bus routes are unreliable, and inadequate in frequency and routing meaning more often than not, residents have to choose their car for daily trips.
The trial of the Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) was initiated with good intentions - to reduce traffic and pollution. However, it seems to be addressing the symptoms rather than the root cause of our traffic woes.
We propose that instead of focusing solely on LTNs which can lead to displacement of traffic into other areas, we adopt a more holistic approach. This could include creating cycle lanes which would not only encourage cycling but also make it safer for residents like myself who wish to cycle more often. Widely accessible cycle schemes for schools could also be implemented as they have been proven successful in other parts of the UK such as Cambridge where 47% school children bike or walk to school (source: Cambridge City Council). Ride sharing initiatives could further help in reducing individual car usage.
By targeting the source rather than just managing symptoms we can create a healthier environment while improving quality of life in Streatham Wells. We urge local authorities to reconsider their approach towards this issue by reversing the trial on LTNs and adopting these comprehensive solutions instead.
