I've been deeply troubled by the recent policy changes affecting the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. As someone who's been closely observing the devastating impacts of this conflict, I am particularly concerned about the recent shift to lift certain sanctions against Russia while restricting the use of critical military technologies, like Starlink, by the Ukrainian forces. This not only compromises Ukraine's defensive capabilities but endangers countless lives.
Lifting sanctions against Russia sends a problematic message of leniency at a time when Ukraine continues to suffer aggression and territorial encroachments. Such actions undermine the international community’s efforts to hold Russia accountable for its actions. On the other hand, restricting critical technologies like Starlink, which has been pivotal for military intelligence and communication, places Ukrainian military operations at a significant disadvantage.
According to Eurostat reports, over 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced since the conflict escalated, with thousands losing their lives or being heavily wounded. The humanitarian crisis continues to unravel, making it imperative for international policies to focus on providing support and strategic advantages to Ukraine rather than limiting them.
I propose that a more balanced approach is urgently required—one that maintains sanctions on Russia until there is a verifiable commitment to peace and sovereignty for Ukraine. Additionally, it's crucial to allow Ukrainian forces to fully utilise technologies like Starlink without restrictions. By doing so, we can not only boost their defensive capabilities but also protect and save lives.
