The Issue

The recent changes in the recital policy at the University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music have caused significant upheaval and concern among students. With the new changes, the essence of what made this institution a cornerstone of musical innovation is now at risk.

One of the main issues with the revised policy is the increased restrictions on recital locations and accessibility to view. Essentially, Undergraduate Music Education Majors, and more who do not fit the criteria of this cut, at the University of North Texas are not allowed to have their recital live streamed or recorded. Additionally, they are no longer allowed to perform in the beautiful spaces UNT has to offer. They are constricted to the choir room, which is a small room without proper seating and performance room requirements that make brass/ensemble playing what it is. If we cannot reserve the choir room, we are encouraged to reserve a space outside of UNT campus when these very spaces are what we pay our tuition for.

The policy adjustments have been made without adequate input or consultation from those directly affected being the students. This lack of transparent and inclusive communication undermines the trust that UNT College of Music should have in its students.

We urge all concerned parties, including students, faculty, alumni, and music aficionados, to support this cause and sign this petition. Together, we can help restore the inclusive and dynamic environment that is essential for fostering future generations of musical talent at UNT College of Music.
