Reverse Program Suspensions at Fleming Frost Campus
The Issue
On April 25th, Fleming College announced via email the suspension of 29 programs, with 14 of these programs located at the Frost campus. This decision raises concerns for current and prospective students, alumni, industry, and the local economy. Fleming College has long held a reputation as the best environmental campus in the country for environmental studies, a reputation now jeopardized by these suspensions.
Moreover, this decision will adversely affect industry, as Fleming graduates are highly valued for their education and practical knowledge in the environmental field. With fewer graduates available for employment, industries will face challenges in meeting their staffing needs.
This petition also extends its concerns to the Lindsay community, including local businesses and landlords. The combination of an international student cap and the suspension of almost half the programs at the Frost campus will inevitably reduce student numbers in Lindsay. This decline will have significant repercussions for local businesses that rely on students for sales and part-time employment. Likewise, landlords will experience increased vacancies in rental properties, impacting their livelihoods.
The sudden shift in student population will undoubtedly have negative effects on the local economy in Lindsay. Therefore, as students of the Fleming College Frost campus, we urge President Adamson to reconsider the suspension of all programs at Frost. Granting students time to voice their concerns about the college's future and its programs is crucial to addressing these pressing issues.
