The Issue

I believe in the right to privacy, and this extends to the personal items I carry with me every day. As a concerned student in the East Baton Rouge Parish, I find it worrisome that our backpacks are subject to public display due to the clear backpack policy implemented in our schools. This policy, intended as a safety measure, has inadvertently stripped away a layer of privacy that students previously enjoyed and relied upon.

The clear backpack policy mandates that students use transparent bags, ostensibly to prevent the carrying of dangerous items. However, this approach is overly intrusive and fails to address the root cause of safety issues within our schools. Instead, it singles out students who might carry personal items such as hygiene products, medications, or valuable personal belongings. No one should feel vulnerable or exposed when carrying their personal essentials.

There are better, less intrusive methods to ensure student safety, such as implementing advanced security measures at school entrances, hiring trained security personnel, and promoting a community-based approach to safety where students feel comfortable reporting suspicious activities. Schools should focus on holistic safety practices that don't compromise student privacy or dignity.

Research by the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers highlights that effective safety plans should not only focus on security but also on perception, prevention, and relationships. Intrusive policies like these might actually deter students from feeling satisfied and safe in their own school environment, which could result in less engagement and higher levels of anxiety.

I urge the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to reconsider this policy and explore alternatives that do not invade student privacy. Let's focus on creating a secure yet respectful environment for all students. Please join me in signing this petition to reverse the clear backpack policy and advocate for a balanced approach to school safety.
