Reversal of NC law statute on the release of police body cam footage. (G.S 132-1.4A

The Issue

The ideology of law enforcement agencies being forthcoming with the truth and exhibiting transparency is rooted in a myth, that all men are created equal. Unfortunately, the foundation of policing in America is constructed on the concepts of systemic racism. The patterns and practices of the police, needs reform that will be inclusive and transparent to the community in which they serve.

The fundamental goal of this petition is to ensure in all instances, the community can visualize the efforts of law enforcement to be transparent, while demonstrating professionalism and acknowledging the cultural diversity within that community. The release of police body camera footage is essential when trying to cultivate a relationship with the community. The lack of transparency can only lead the community to speculate about the worst possible atrocities committed at the hands of law enforcement.

My activism to acquire a progressive change in NC is dear to my heart. I'm tired of the murder of black/brown people by the hands of law enforcement without recourse. I'm annoyed at the lack of equity, transparency and accountability. Mostly, I’m distressed by the volume of hashtags that leave family units devastated while the justice system persecutes the victims. The accused individual should never be judged, convicted and sentenced to death by law enforcement. Today, I stand on the shoulder of my ancestors grasping to obtain the inalienable rights. The heartbreak I feel is genuine and valid because I am my brother's keeper. Silence is no longer an option but our united voices are essential.

The elected representatives must be cognizant of the constituents they serve. With this in mind, to serve the public is a privilege. Moreover, transparency within the community is a necessity in order to try to rebuild a fractured law enforcement. The reversal of the police body camera statute should be overturned in the state of North Carolina.
