The Issue

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connects Nairobi and Mombasa, carrying thousands of Kenyans travelling for business, work, tourism and family commitments. But for passengers travelling economy class, the experience can be far less comfortable than it should be.

As a regular SGR passenger, I believe it is time Kenya Railways Corporation addressed the uncomfortable seating, hard cushions, face-to-face seating arrangements and concerns about poorly maintained toilets and coaches.

At a fare of KSh 1,500 for the journey I am referring to, passengers deserve more than simply being transported from one city to another. They deserve comfort, cleanliness and dignity.

Kenya Railways has reportedly begun introducing upgraded economy-class seats. That is welcome progress, but improvements must reach all passengers. Access to upgraded seats should also be straightforward, including for people booking online.

What we want Kenya Railways to do
-Upgrade economy-class seating and improve comfort.
-Accelerate the refurbishment of ageing coaches.
-Keep toilets clean, functional and properly maintained.
-Make upgraded seats easy to identify and book online.
-Publish clear timelines for completing improvements.

We are not demanding luxury. We are asking for a reasonable standard of comfort and cleanliness on a journey that takes several hours.

Sign this petition and help call on Kenya Railways Corporation to make the SGR economy-class experience better for everyone.

Better seats. Cleaner toilets. Better-maintained coaches. A better journey for every passenger.
