The Issue

Living in Martinsburg, West Virginia, I want to share a deeply personal experience that reveals an urgent need for change in our local healthcare system. During a medical crisis at Berkeley Medical Center, I encountered a series of troubling protocols and responses that left me feeling more isolated than supported. This experience wasn't just a minor inconvenience—it's emblematic of a larger issue affecting many patients with seizure disorders.

I have epilepsy and a mixed seizure disorder, and when I last sought help at Berkeley Medical Center, I was having about 10 seizures a day. Despite this, my condition was inadequately addressed. There was a disconnect between what I needed and the care provided. During my visit, I was left feeling misunderstood and stigmatized, particularly when they separated me from my primary advocate, my husband. His presence was crucial for communication, yet hospital staff dismissed this need despite my evident distress and medical state.

The lack of understanding and appropriate response from medical staff culminated in an unnecessary escalation where I was at risk of being admitted to the psychiatric ward, despite my seizures being the primary issue. This response not only jeopardized my immediate health needs but also deepened my distrust in seeking professional medical help. My experience isn't unique—it's a fear shared by many in our community who live with similar conditions.

This is why I am calling for a comprehensive revamp of the crisis intervention protocols at Berkeley Medical Center and all Martinsburg healthcare facilities. This is crucial to ensure that patients with seizure disorders receive the understanding and specialized care they deserve. Proper training for staff in recognizing and responding to seizure disorders can make all the difference in preventing traumatic experiences like mine.

We cannot allow patients to feel unsafe or mismanaged during their moments of greatest vulnerability. Please join me in advocating for a change in our healthcare systems to provide the compassionate and competent care that all Martinsburg residents deserve. Sign this petition to demand a review and overhaul of the current procedures to better protect and serve our community.
