The Issue

Born and raised in Kinston, NC, I have seen our city struggle firsthand. Without parental guidance, I navigated these streets largely alone. The lack of support for the homeless, those battling addiction, and the broader black community was glaring then, and, unfortunately, it remains unaddressed today despite our city's $133 million budget intended for a population of only 19,000.

Our city has the financial resources, yet it feels misallocated. We see funds diverted away from opportunities and programs that could significantly improve lives. It is time for our city leadership to reconsider how taxpayer dollars are spent. Prioritizing transparent bidding is paramount. This ensures we choose the most affordable yet effective contractors to work on vital public projects.

Moreover, our strategy should include direct investments in programs for the youth, essential to breaking the cycle of poverty and violence. Public housing units that have been inactive can be revived, serving as a proactive solution to reduce both gun and gang violence.

Additionally, Kinston must focus on supporting the elderly, handicapped, mentally unstable, and those struggling with drug addiction. We must take meaningful steps towards enriching the lives of every citizen because we are only as strong as our weakest link.

Together, let's hold the City of Kinston accountable. Only through collective action can we drive change and build a stronger, more inclusive community. Sign this petition to demand a more equitable distribution of our city's budget.
