Revamp diesel fuel emission standards and promoting cleaner transport in Kenya
The Issue
As a cyclist in Eldoret I have come to note the increased levels of dirty smoke , emitted primarily from poorly maintained trucks and public transport buses using substandard diesel fuel. This got me thinking that this air pollution is not just an environmental concern but a public health crisis that affects every resident.
Diesel engines are a significant source of air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which elevate the levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, contributing to global warming. More concerningly, they lead to serious respiratory illnesses among the residents, with children and the elderly being the most vulnerable. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to diesel exhaust can lead to chronic respiratory problems, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
Current emission standards in Kenya are inadequate and outdated. A review and revamp of these standards are long overdue. It is crucial for the health of our cities and residents that we raise the emission standards of diesel fuel. Improved standards can ensure the use of cleaner, more efficient fuels that emit less harmful pollutants, thus significantly reducing air pollution. Simply put, cleaner air means healthier citizens and, ultimately, a sustainable environment for future generations. This will also encourage people to use cycling as a cleaner alternative means of transport as they will be exposed to less dirty smoke during their commutes
The government has the power to enforce stricter regulations and provide incentives for the adoption of cleaner technologies. We urge the Ministry of Environment, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and other relevant authorities to take immediate action in implementing tougher emission standards eg the EN 590 and Euro 6 standards on diesel fuel and tailpipe emissions, respectively, and promoting the use of alternative, eco-friendly fuels. We believe that with these initiatives, Kenya can set a precedent in combating air pollution.
