Reusable Nappy Council Incentive Scheme for Liverpool

Reusable Nappy Council Incentive Scheme for Liverpool
Why this petition matters

Disposable nappies are the third largest contributor to landfill, with each baby producing an average of 5,000-6,000 nappies by the time they potty train. This alone accounts for 30% of non-biodegradable waste sent to landfill.
With nearly 3 billion nappies sold annually in the UK, used disposable nappy waste amounts to around 500,000 tons per year.
It’s more important than ever that local councils encourage new parents to try reusable options in order to fight the climate crisis.
In 2019 Liverpool City Council declared that planet Earth is facing a climate change emergency.
All political parties within the city agreed to work together to rise to the challenge of an impending ecological disaster by making Liverpool a Net Zero Carbon city by 2030.
However, Liverpool Council are one of few councils in the UK that do not offer a reusable nappy incentive for new parents.
This petition is to encourage Liverpool city council to consider starting a reusable nappy incentive scheme. Given the climate emergency that has been declared, we think they need to start taking reusable seriously, and fast. The council need to be proactive in their approach, offering parents a genuine incentive to use reusables instead of only encouraging single use disposables.
In the long term using reusable nappies works out more cost effective than disposables. However, the initial cost can make it hard for a lot of new parents to access, especially with the cost of living crisis. This incentive scheme could also help a lot of struggling new families to reduce their weekly spending by eliminating the need to buy disposable nappies and/or wipes.
For anyone considering using cloth nappies in Liverpool area and is worried about the initial cost (especially while there is no incentive scheme). The Cloth Nappy Library based at Big You, Little You on Aigburth Road has a brilliant system where you can hire a range of cloth nappy kits. This gives you the opportunity to try different brands and types of nappies to find the right fit and style before committing to buying your own stash. The hire kit is available at a small fee, with lots of advise and guidance along the way. Get in touch with them, website below, or search on Facebook or Instagram.
