Educating Doctors on Disorder that Mimic Child Abuse

Educating Doctors on Disorder that Mimic Child Abuse
The Issue
In 2009, Dr. Kathryn Crowell of Penn state Hershey Medical Hospital falsely testified and accused parents of child abuse. Later, medical evidence proved their innocents. In this case, several known experts, such as, Dr. David Ayoub of Spingfield, IL, concluded the baby had a bleeding disorder and rickets. The case was closed and the children were returned.
Sadly, after admitting to false testimony in court, Dr. Kathryn Crowell still is practicing child abuse and is accusing Jessica Battiato and Cosme Escudero-Aviles of abusing their baby Cesar.
Doctors can fail to recognize or to rule out a medical diagnosis and set a default diagnosis of "Child Abuse". It is known that several medical disorders can mimic child abuse such as, Menkes disease, Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, GE Reflux, Dubowitz Syndrome, Alagille Syndrome, Scurvey, Vitamin D deficency or Rickets, Osteogensis Imperfect, etc.
Furthermore, Jessica had a very tough pregnancy in which could be a key to the baby bone development in the womb. Doctors Should have looked further into Prenatal history, blood work (Vitamin D.), and any other complication.
This petition is to bring awarness of Disorders and Diseases that mimic Child Abuse and Doctors Should better EDUCATE themselves on them!
Vitamin D deficiency/Insufficiency or also known as, Rickets, is still an epidemic. In many countries, it is recommended children are required an adequate amount of vitamin d intake daily to prevent risk. Such risk can cause diseases and illnesses known as Rickets. Rickets can begin in the early stages of life. Babies who are breastfed are required supplementation of Vitamin D(Indian J Med Res. 1-3).
Many newly breastfed moms are not aware of this.. As new parents, we were always told breast milk is the best nutrition for the baby and their health. However, we were never told it lacked vitamin d. Vitamin D is essential to bone health. Not enough intake of vitamin d is nearly the root cause of may other illnesses.
When one defect is found in the body and Vitamin D is associated along with this disease, illness, or disorder, it will effect the child's growth (Indian J Med Res. 1)
Particularly, EDS or known as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, has been noted with low levels of Vitamin D as well as other nutritional deficiencies. Ehlers Danlos-Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects your skin, joints, and blood vessels. Those with EDS have skin that is fragile, flexible joints, and the most sever type is when the blood vessels rupture. Children who have been diagnosed with EDS, normally is passed down from one of their parents. Most genetic testing is available to identify a carrier of EDS, however, Type III has no genetic testing and is clinically diagnosed. Type III known as EDS Hypermobility type, effects the most major joints in the body causing dislocations, locking or clicking, fractures, pain, bruising of the skin , and muscle spasms. It is recommended of those who have EDS, to intake vitamin d daily and other supplements to prevent deterioration in the joints or bones. Many individuals who experience symptoms of EDS III continue life without becoming diagnosed years later. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is known as a rare genetic disorder, however, more individuals are coming forward and becoming diagnosed. This rare disorder has now been brought to the attention of the media and to many well known doctors speaking out about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
After discovering our son was diagnosed with Vitamin D insufficiency and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, the medical mystery was no longer a mystery....
Our days with our Baby boy Cesar Junior:
On April 19th, 2015 Cesar Jr. was taken to the Emergency Room for a swallon leg. After several test, the doctors believed he had an infection in his leg known as cellulitis and had begun treating him with antibiotics at 3 months of age. After treatment, it was noted this was no longer an infection. As concerned parents, we began to question the doctors ability to diagnose what is wrong with our baby, We requested to transfer him to Childrens Hershey Medical Hospital,
Once we arrived with Cesar Jr, the hospital began to run alot of test. During observation, we began to think "Could this be a medical mystery?" But, things changed...
Xrays reveled Cesar Jr had multiple fractures in his body. Blood results revealed Cesar had a low vitamin d, high calcium, high Alk Phosphate, and high ALT. We were told by the doctor his blood work was normal and was due to the fractures. Our first reaction was "How so many? This doesn't make sense? He is so happy. He has never shown any sign of pain?"
Vitamin D deficiency or Insufficiency can cause Rickets or fractures in the bone by daily handling of a baby. We were not aware of our sons fractures or deficiency until our fate of losing our child had come. Hershey diagnosed Cesar Jr as being "abused".
After consulting with several world renowned doctors, such as, Endocrinologist Dr. Holick, Radiologist Dr. Ayoub, and Geneticist Dr.Miller, Our son was diagnosed with Vitamin D insufficiency and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Type III. Also, Cesar sees a occupational therapist for feeding concerns and to help build his pincer grasp due to his hypermobility in his fingers. With our doctors reports, we are required to battle in court we are not guilty of abusing our child. As you all know our justice system, 'you are guilty until proven innocent.' We continue to fight and for our son to be returned home. We will continue to strive and fight to reveal the truth and advocate for our son and his medical condition.
