Return Waveland Golf Course to Chicago and its History
The Issue
Waveland Golf Course opened to the public in 1932 on the shores of Lake Michigan on Chicago's North Side and quickly became one of the City’s most iconic landmarks.
For generations, it was known to Chicagoans simply as 'Waveland' — a name deeply tied to the neighborhood, the lakefront, and the people who played there.
In 1991, despite public pushback, a Parks Committee voted to rename Waveland Golf Course after Sydney R. Marovitz, a private attorney and former Chicago Park District board member.
Even though many Chicagoans still call it Waveland, the Marovitz family has enjoyed the recognition for nearly 40 years. Now, as the course approaches its 100th anniversary, it’s time to officially return the name to the people.
