Last week Water UK, the industry body who represent water companies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, issued an open apology for their continued poor performance on the sewage pollution issue.
In addition to the apology, they promised to invest £10 billion into infrastructure by 2030 to tackle the growing problem.
However, it quickly emerged that, rather than investing the funds from their own pockets, it would be done at the expense of the billpayer, with incremental increases to be expected in the coming years in addition to the record 7.5% rise that was applied in April.
Water quality campaigners are now rightly questioning why we should have to pay twice for a service that hasn't been delivered once.
