The Issue

We call on the Fort Belknap Indian Community Council to begin negotiations with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Great Falls–Billings to return 319 acres of land currently held by the Diocese in Hays, Montana — land that includes the former site of St. Paul’s Mission Boarding School.

This land holds deep significance for the Aaniiih and Nakoda people, representing a place of both historical trauma and enduring strength. Reclaiming this land is not only a matter of justice — it is a step toward healing and restoring rightful stewardship.

A community survey conducted in 2025 showed that over 91% of respondents support these negotiations.

We call upon:

The Fort Belknap Indian Community Council to move forward.
The Diocese of Great Falls–Billings to engage in good faith.
Supporters across Indian Country and beyond to stand with Fort Belknap in this just cause.
✊🏽 Let us move forward with truth, reconciliation, healing, and land justice.

It’s time to return the land. It’s time to heal.
