Return postal service to Glenroy
Return postal service to Glenroy
The issue
The closure of the Australia Post outlet in Post Office Place, Glenroy, has had a significant impact on residents who previously relied upon the outlet for postal, bill payment and other services.
Council has previously recognised the importance of accessible postal services to the Glenroy community. On 13 September 2023, Council resolved to advocate to Australia Post and the Federal Minister for Communications regarding the closure of the Glenroy Post Office and to seek the reinstatement of postal services. Council's resolution specifically raised concerns regarding the impact of the closure on residents with mobility challenges and the accessibility of alternative post offices.
The closest postal service which allows residents to pay bills is Hadfield, Oak Park or Broadmeadows. This means that a significant number of residents have been effectively cut off from an accessible service.
The current proposal to provide a Community Postal Agent service through the Pascoe Vale Road newsagency provides an opportunity to restore a local postal presence. However, the proposed service does not address the full range of services that residents have identified as necessary.
Australia Post's own published information states that Community Postal Agents can provide basic postage and mail services but do not offer agency services such as bill payment and banking.
This distinction is particularly important for Glenroy residents who rely on being able to pay bills in person. Australia Post confirms that Post Billpay enables eligible bills to be paid in person at participating Post Offices, including by cash, EFTPOS, debit and credit card and, where applicable, cheque.
While online, telephone and app-based payment options are available, these options do not provide an equivalent service for all members of the community. Some residents rely on face-to-face services and may not have access to, or confidence using, online banking, smartphones or other digital payment methods.
The Pascoe Vale Road newsagency has indicated its willingness to operate an Australia Post service. This provides a practical opportunity for Australia Post to establish a properly equipped postal outlet in Glenroy without requiring residents to travel outside the local shopping precinct.
