Return parking rights to food staff and students
The Issue
Give Hofstra Students Our Parking Back
Hofstra University: We need you to listen.
Every morning, thousands of Hofstra students drive to campus expecting one simple thing: a reasonable place to park so we can get to class.
But that has become increasingly difficult.
As a commuter student arriving around 7:30 AM, I regularly see 50% or more of the student parking in the South Side already filled before 8:00 AM. These are the lots closest to where many of our classes are held — the very areas students need access to in order to get to class on time.
Meanwhile, we see faculty and staff parking areas that are often far from completely full, with many spaces sitting empty.
So we have to ask:
Why are student parking spaces being taken away when students are already struggling to find parking?
This isn't about blaming faculty. It isn't about attacking staff. And it certainly isn't about bringing Hofstra down.
This is about fairness.
Hofstra is a commuter school. Students drive to campus every day. Many of us have jobs, internships, family responsibilities, and long commutes. We arrive early because we are trying to be responsible and make it to class on time — yet we are still competing for a limited number of student spaces.
And students aren't the only ones affected.
We have also heard concerns from Hofstra dining staff, who work on campus every day and face parking restrictions of their own. Many of these employees have to park in designated green sections and may have to walk significant distances to get to work every morning.
That isn't fair to them either.
The people who work hard every day to keep Hofstra running deserve better. Students who pay to attend Hofstra deserve better.
We shouldn't be fighting each other for parking.
There has to be a better solution.
We are asking Hofstra University to:
Restore student parking spaces that have been taken away.
Review actual parking utilization across campus.
Look at the empty spaces in faculty/staff areas while student lots are overflowing.
Consider the needs of commuter students and campus employees equally.
Work with students and staff to create a parking system that actually reflects how the campus is used every morning.
We understand that Hofstra has limited space. We understand that faculty and staff need parking too.
But if parking spaces are sitting empty while students are circling full lots before 8 AM, something needs to change.
We are not asking for special treatment.
We are asking for a fair system.
We are not creating this petition because we hate Hofstra.
We are creating it because we care about our university and want it to do better.
Hofstra is our campus too.
Our tuition helps keep this university running. Our presence makes up this community. Our voices deserve to be heard.
So Hofstra, please listen to your commuter students.
Work with us.
Find a solution.
Give us our parking back.
If you believe Hofstra students deserve fair and accessible parking, sign this petition and share it with your fellow students.
This isn't students vs. faculty.
This isn't students vs. staff.
This is the Hofstra community asking for a better solution.
