Dear friends,
Reality is still sinking in painfully for many of us, so we thought we’d let you know what former RN music presenters are up to.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
You can stay in touch with Paul Gough (The Inside Sleeve) for updates about what he’s up to by emailing: theinsidesleeve@gmail.com
Similarly, you can find out what Lucky Oceans (The Daily Planet) is up to by contacting him here: lucyoceans.bandzoogle.com
Alice Keath (The Live Set) will be presenting weekend Afternoons on ABC Classic FM this year, and will continue making radio for RN.
Geoff Wood (The Rhythm Divine) will still be producing short segments for Radio National.
Jazztrack continues on ABC Jazz; available via digital radio and your TV.
We haven’t been able to contact Miyuki Jokiranta from Soundproof, but will let you know any details we come across.
PARLIAMENTARY SUBMISSION:
We also wanted to let you know that today the campaign lodged a submission to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee regarding the Inquiry into the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Rural and Regional Advocacy) Bill 2015.
In the submission, we outlined how ABC Management’s decision to axe most of its music content on Radio National will affect regional and rural music economies, regional listeners and communities. We also presented recommendations in regard to Bill amendments. If our submission is accepted, the committee will publish it online.
For further information about this Bill, see: http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Environment_and_Communications/ABC_Rural_Regional_Bill
LASTLY:
While preparing for our meeting with ABC Management last week, we compiled the following statistics with the generous help of members of our Facebook community.
In between 1 Nov 2016 - 16 Jan 2017:
'The Daily Planet' aired 451 tracks, represented music from 41 different nationalities across 17 genres and 53% content was Australian.
'The Inside Sleeve' aired 480 tracks across 12 genres and 42.7% content was Australian.
Over six months last year, 'The Live Set' aired 27 shows featuring 42 artists from 9 different nationalities, across 7 genres. 33% was Australian content and within Australian content, there was significant ethnic diversity.
Over the past few years ‘The Live Set’ also broadcast live concerts in Inuktitut, French, Italian, Gaelic, Spanish, Korean, Yoruba, Mandarin, Greek, Zulu, Ukrainian, Bambara, Ngarrindjeri, Pitjantjatjara, Kaurna, and Kriol.
Across all shows, much of the above content was unique to Radio National.
This is the diversity we have lost and will continue to advocate for.
All the best from the #saveRNmusic team
