Return children to biological families
The Issue
Six years ago, my life took a heartbreaking turn. My grandson, a vibrant child full of life and promise, was abruptly taken away by Child Protective Services during a visit to California. Since birth, he was under my care in Arizona, thriving in a loving environment. The sudden separation has marred his childhood, leading to PTSD and depression, issues that have been magnified by his current living situation where the caretaker screams incessantly, perpetuating his trauma.
In a desperate attempt to bring him home, I filed for the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) — as did my entire family — hoping that our legal rights and the well-being of my grandson would be prioritised. Yet, despite hiring an attorney, who arrived unprepared, our voices were never heard in court, nor have we been allowed to see my grandson. He deserves to be surrounded by family who love him unconditionally and who have cared for him since birth.
The plight of countless families like mine who have been fractured by bureaucratic inefficiencies and unjust separations needs urgent attention. There are countless cases where children linger in the system while capable and willing biological families are kept at arm's length due to red tape and procedural failures.
We are calling on state authorities in Arizona and California, as well as the Child Protective Services, to reassess the policies that hinder the reunification of families. Specifically, we implore them to revise the ICPC processes to ensure timely and fair assessments that consider the best interest of the child. Moreover, there needs to be increased transparency and accountability in court proceedings involving minors, enabling family members to be present and heard in courtrooms.
