The issue

In 1962, Gretel was Australia's first challenger in the prestigious America's Cup and the first yacht to seize a race victory against the Americans since 1934 (surfing home in front of US President John F. Kennedy, no less).

Gretel helped to put Australia on the global stage.  Her legacy is etched in the annals of sailing history, representing Australia's spirit of competitiveness and excellence.

Gretel’s win in 1962 was an inspiration for further attempts at the Cup, resulting in the historic 1983 America’s Cup victory – the first time any country in the world beat the Americans in this iconic series.   The political, tourism and economic benefits from this famous win were significant, and cemented Australia as a global powerhouse in the sporting and business community.

Now, Gretel stands derelict in Europe, a shadow of her former glory, awaiting the chance to once again sail with grace and purpose.

Her current state of disrepair calls for urgent action before it is too late!  With the support of the New South Wales and Australian governments, and other benefactors, we have a chance to restore her.

By restoring her we can preserve a significant piece of Australian maritime heritage for future generations to learn from and appreciate.

And, once restored and operating to serve the community, the grand old lady of the sea, Gretel, can once again help our amazing country, by -

  • Providing an amazing platform to support those less fortunate, with fun and learn-to-sail days on Sydney Harbour.
  • Generating tourism revenue.
  • Supporting charity events and corporate team-building days.
  • Showcasing to the world (yet again) our ability to rise above adversity and achieve great outcomes.
  • Providing an uplifting story of resiliance and second chances, benefiting many with mental health and other personal challenges.

For me this is very close to home, as my family once had the honour to own and care for Gretel for nearly 10 years.  I saw first hand what a beautiful yacht she is, and more importantly the hugely positive impact she can have on the community.

WHY SHOULD YOU SIGN THIS?
By signing this petition, you will be helping to urge government and private sectors to recognize the historical value of Gretel, and take decisive action to help fund her return, and then plan for her restoration. Let us save Gretel from obscurity and allow her to shine once more on our waters and in our harbours, inspiring all members of the community.

Your support can make a tremendous difference in reviving this emblem of Australian achievement and cultural legacy – thank you.
