Retract the YouTube & New tab page block in OJUSD
The Issue
Every day, students in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District (OJUSD) in California face increasing restrictions on how they access information and learn online. I am a student deeply concerned about the extreme measures taken by OJUSD with the use of GoGuardian, an internet censorship and spyware tool.
GoGuardian is utilized under the pretext of safeguarding students, but its overreach is undeniable. Recently, it has not only blocked access to the new tab page but has gone a step further by enabling a blanket YouTube block. This action is egregious as it prevents students from accessing vast arrays of educational content. Imagine trying to complete a science project or a history presentation without the resources of YouTube – it’s practically crippling our ability to learn effectively.
The unnecessary and excessive censorship has transformed the district from a vibrant learning community into one that resembles a prison. Students under constant surveillance are less likely to express themselves, ask questions, or engage creatively, all of which are crucial components of a safe and conducive learning environment. Evidently, a study indicated that monitored students feel less personal freedom and are inhibited in their behavior, which directly hinders their educational development.
The OJUSD must reassess its decisions. Blocking vital educational resources hampers both our learning and personal growth rather than promoting it. By lifting these restrictions and moderating the application of GoGuardian, the district can foster a healthier, more open learning environment.
