Good Evening Everybody and Happy New Year!
To quote Superintendent DiCarlo, "Please be advised that, at this time, the Mahopac Central School District is not interested in undertaking your desired efforts to change the mascot, as our limited time and resources are needed in other essential, and valuable educational areas consistent with the District’s priorities. Accordingly, I feel it is best we cancel our meeting on January 8, 2020. "
After only ONE meeting back in October, to open the conversation for evidence and indigenous voice, I received this email. This is absolutely unacceptable. Our elected school board and appointed superintendent are refusing to consult with fact and expert, firsthand indigenous opinion to elucidate and vocalize upon this issue! Instead, they chose to cancel our meeting on the 8th with indigenous health experts, Dr. Melissa Walls and Dr. Melissa Lewis, and close the thought of even consulting the large body of research in support of this change.
I gave him one more opportunity to reopen this conversation, but alas that time has expired. Thus, I will begin posting, to this petition, the official letters of support for this change from 100% indigenous people and organizations.
Don't take my word for why this change needs to occur, instead read it from the people that this complacency is affecting!
Attached you will find our first letter of support from the Wisconsin Indian Education Association's "Indian" Mascot and Logo Taskforce.
Expect more to come. I will not quit on this journey for social justice and equity.
~Sincerely,
Daniel Ehrenpreis
