Rethinking Success: Opposing Zero-Based Grading System

Rethinking Success: Opposing Zero-Based Grading System
The Issue
Zero-Based Grading System refers to a curriculum or grading scale that measures the ability of many students when it comes to three criteria—performance task/recitation, quizzes/activities, and periodical examination, where these three have their own percentage of grading. Zero-Based Grading System is literally affecting a lot of students, especially those schools that applied them. This is personally affecting senior high school and college students in terms of grades. Yeah, it is beneficial among teachers because in this curriculum it measures the efforts and skills of their students. Although, even if you aced or excelled in every quiz and performance task, once you've got a low score in a periodic exam, all your efforts would disappear, and it would drag your grades down in your academic performance. Additionally, even if you stay up late studying just to pass, it's nonsense. This petition is specifically made to be the bridge between the education panels and high school/college students to make them rethink their decision and make a favorable grading system for all the students.
In more simple terms, changing the Zero-Based Grading System could lead to a more equitable assessment framework that values consistent effort of students over singular performances. Allowing for flexibility in how grades are calculated (providing opportunities for retakes) could enhance student motivation and engagement. Conversely, maintaining the status quo risks can continue stress among students while failing to accurately reflect their capabilities across diverse learning experiences. The decision ultimately impacts not only individual student outcomes but also broader educational equity within institutions.
Immediate action is necessary because changing the grading system to a more equitable framework is important to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their learning. This shift can enhance student motivation and engagement by allowing for flexibility in grading, such as opportunities for retakes. By adopting a more inclusive grading approach, educational institutions can foster an environment where all students have equal opportunities to succeed.
