The Issue

The introduction of Chromebooks for students in the second grade and below in Vigo County has sparked significant debate and concern among parents, myself included. Having experienced firsthand the challenges associated with my child using a Chromebook at home, I feel compelled to address this issue publicly.

As a concerned parent, I have noticed that everything required to be done on the Chromebook is not something that my child can manage independently. When the device is at home, it often becomes a distraction, steering away from educational purposes. Additionally, it is disconcerting that I never agreed to have such a device in my home, yet it has become a part of our daily lives. Frustratingly, I have also learned that not all schools within our district enforce this policy, which feels inequitable.

This petition urges the Vigo County School Corporation to reconsider their current policy of mandating Chromebooks for young students. Specifically, we propose two main changes:

1. Offer parents a choice: It is crucial that parents have a say in whether or not their child's Chromebook is brought home. This choice should be respected in all schools across the district to maintain consistency and fairness.

2. Implement alternative solutions for snow days: For younger students, traditional snow day learning packets should be introduced. These paper packets are a more effective way for young learners to engage with their studies without the digital distraction of a Chromebook.

Moreover, for those who choose to continue using Chromebooks, the school corporation should offer a night class for parents. This class will serve to educate them on how to navigate and utilize Chromebooks effectively, ensuring they can support their child's learning experience.

Reconsidering the policy on Chromebooks for young students also aligns with creating a more inclusive and flexible education system—one that respects the diverse needs and preferences of families throughout Vigo County.

Please join me in calling on the Vigo County School Corporation to adopt these thoughtful changes. Your support can help ensure our children receive an education that respects both educational goals and family preferences. Sign this petition to make a difference today!
