The Issue

As a parent within the Chesterfield County school system, I am deeply troubled by the impending relocation of our school counselor to another school. Performing multiple roles serving the academic, social, and emotional needs of students, school counselors are irreplaceable assets. Their value in shaping our children's future is immeasurable.

According to the American School Counselor Association, a student-to-school counselor ratio of 250:1 is recommended to effectively address the comprehensive needs of students. Yet, this ratio is frequently overshadowed, especially in public schools, exacerbating the challenges faced by both the counselors and students alike. In the face of such challenges, it is even more critical to retain the few counselors we have.

Taking our counselor from one school to accommodate the needs of another undermines the vital support structure in place for our students. Such moves disrupt the rapport counselors have built with their students, breaking trust, and causing negative implications on students' academic performance and mental health.

We implore the Chesterfield County school system decision-makers to consider the ramifications of such an action. Let's prioritize the stability of our students and their emotional well-being. Retain our school counselor.

Please, sign this petition to help us keep our school counselor where they are most needed.
