The Issue

I grew up on Pleasant Street, where our entire town gathers together on the Fourth of July. Friends, family, and even our local police department attend these celebrations. Officer Mullins was there for my family in our toughest times — when my cousin and my son's father passed away on Lake Helen Osteen Road and just two months ago when my mom passed away. They provided support, respect, and dignity with wholehearted love.

Now, there's a proposal to replace our beloved Lake Helen Police Department with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. This change threatens the very fabric of our community. Our local police force not only understands the unique needs of Lake Helen but also provides timely, compassionate responses tailored to our close-knit community.

If the Sheriff's Office steps in, we risk losing the personal connections, the community-focused policing, and the timely assistance in life-or-death situations that we currently rely on. Replacing our police department with county sheriffs would likely increase response times due to their stretched resources over a larger area. Moreover, events that bring vibrancy and unity, such as horses riding down our roads, July Fourth fireworks, and kids' games, might no longer be possible.

The Lake Helen Police Department is integral to maintaining our small-town charm and ensuring safety. Reducing us to mere numbers under the Sheriff's service is not the solution. Sign this petition to voice your support for retaining our local police department. Together, we can keep the spirit and safety of Lake Helen alive.
