Retain David Ireland as Theatre Teacher for Eleanor Roosevelt Highschool

Retain David Ireland as Theatre Teacher for Eleanor Roosevelt Highschool
The Issue
This petition comes from a place of deep concern and heartfelt sadness. The recent decision by Principal Montgomery of Eleanor Roosevelt Highschool, to not reelect David Ireland as the theatre teacher and program director at Eleanor Roosevelt High School . This decision is troubling for many in our school community.
This theatre program had already suffered significant trauma in the wake of former teacher Chad Costello’s arrest for the sexual misconduct of multiple students. His actions left the program in turmoil, creating deep distrust, fractured relationships, and an environment filled with pain and uncertainty for the students who were affected.Despite the extensive damage left behind, Mr. Ireland stepped into the role of theatre teacher and provided exactly what the students needed—stability, trust, and a safe space to heal. He has fostered a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, bringing students and parents together to create a program rooted in positivity and personal growth. His leadership has helped students regain confidence in themselves, develop a renewed passion for theatre, and form healthy relationships within the program.
Mr. Ireland has been a beacon of light and creativity in our school. His passion for theatre has brought our students together, nurtured their love for the arts, and encouraged them to push the boundaries of their capabilities. The impact Mr. Ireland has made cannot be quantified. His dedication and commitment has positively influenced the lives of hundreds of dear students.
Given this, our community is astounded that such a valuable member of our faculty is being let go. We have struggled to understand the reasoning behind this decision, which undermines the significance of our school's theatre program, and the integrity of the teaching profession itself.
Theatre isn't just an extra-curricular activity, it's a form of expression, it's an opportunity for students to grow, and Mr. Ireland has been pivotal in this journey for so many. He hasn't just taught students about theatre, but life skills they will carry with them throughout their lives. This isn't about a change of staff, it's about the future of our students and the quality of education we deliver.
We, therefore, ask Principal Montgomery and the CNUSD Board of Education to revisit this decision and take into account the concerns of the Eleanor Roosevelt High School community.
We urge everyone reading this to sign this petition and join the fight to keep David Ireland as the Theatre Teacher for Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
