Resurface or Rebuild the Aged Cummer Skatepark in Toronto for Safer Skateboarding

The Issue

Living close to Cummer Skatepark in Toronto, I've observed first-hand the deterioration of a once vibrant skateboarding hub. It is distressing that my son finds it challenging to skateboard safely due to the uneven and harsh surfaces. The park, which has been serving us for 23 years, now sits in a worrying state of disrepair - the concrete is rough, cracked, and, in some places, missing entirely.

Cummer Skatepark is not just any park; it is one of the oldest skateparks in Ontario, a symbol of the skateboarding legacy in this region. However, as the surfaces continue to deteriorate, the park becomes less safe for inexperienced and perhaps even experienced skateboarders. It's hard for young learners like my son to practice and develop their skills on such a surface. It seems unfair that our local youth are denied an opportunity to safely explore this sport, simply because the facility has not been adequately maintained.

We can no longer ignore the need to invest in structural upkeep. Proper maintenance can significantly reduce accident risks in skate parks. According to a report from the Skatepark Project, regular maintenance can decrease accident rates by up to one-third.

Toronto has an active skateboarding community that deserves safe, usable spaces where they can practice, perform, and enjoy their favourite sport. This is a plea to the local authorities of Toronto to acknowledge the issue and take immediate steps to either resurface or entirely rebuild Cummer Skatepark. Our community, our youth, and our future skateboarders need you.

Please, sign this petition and lend your voice to our cause. Our collective effort can ensure the park is restored to its former glory and is safer for all skateboarders.
