Resurface Ascots Lane, Welwyn Garden City

Resurface Ascots Lane, Welwyn Garden City
The Issue
I am writing to urge authorities to take immediate action in resurfacing Ascots Lane in Welwyn Garden City. This road has been a cause of constant frustration and financial strain for myself and many other local residents due to its current neglected state. On multiple occasions, not only have I found myself dealing with damage to my car, including punctured tyres, bent alloy wheels, and issues with steering components, directly attributable to the pothole-laden and uneven surface of the road but so have other local road users.
Ascots Lane is not just any road; it is a vital thoroughfare that many of us rely on daily. Despite its importance, it has been left in a dismal condition, posing a serious risk not just to vehicles, but to the safety of all road users. The multitude of potholes and deteriorating tarmac contribute to dangerous driving conditions which could potentially lead to accidents.
The problem isn't just anecdotal. A report by the RAC Foundation highlights that poor road conditions cost motorists an estimated £4.1 billion annually in repairs, and Ascots Lane is a testament to this alarming statistic. Addressing the state of this road is not merely a matter of convenience but a necessity to prevent further financial burdens and ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
Furthermore the residents have also raised the fact that the pavement and lighting are not fit for purpose and is in fact dangerous to walk/jog/run along with many uneven surfaces and a variety of black spots from not enough street lighting. The pathways are consistently full of salt thus making them extremely slippery. Not forgetting the constant flooding when there is heavy persistent rain to which the Police closed the road briefly last week commencing 23rd January 2026 after it flooded in both directions.
To resolve this issue, I propose a comprehensive resurfacing of Ascots Lane, major improvements to the pavement/pathways and street lighting. Local government and transportation authorities must prioritize this project, allocate appropriate funds, and ensure that the road is restored to a standard that meets safety regulations. Given the frequency with which residents and commuters rely on Ascots Lane, improving its condition should be an urgent priority.
Your support can make a difference and help to prompt the necessary changes. Please sign the petition to demand immediate action to resurface Ascots Lane. Together, we can ensure safer journeys for everyone in Welwyn Garden City.
