Millions of student loan borrowers have done everything right. They enrolled in the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan, made their monthly payments for 20 or 25 years, and reached the legal threshold for forgiveness.

Now, the Department of Education is refusing to cancel those loans.

Even though no court has blocked IBR forgiveness, the Department has quietly paused all discharges under the plan — leaving borrowers in limbo, still making payments they shouldn’t owe.

This isn’t just unfair. It’s possibly illegal. IBR forgiveness is protected by law, and the Department itself has admitted it is not affected by ongoing court battles over other repayment plans.

We’re calling on Education Secretary Linda McMahon and the Department of Education to immediately resume loan forgiveness under the IBR plan!

This pause has gone on for more than a year. That’s thousands of dollars some families can’t afford — and shouldn’t have to pay.

If the government told you to pay for 20 years and you did, your debt should be gone. Anything else is a betrayal.
