The Issue

As someone who is handicapped and unable to drive, the discontinuation of the Seneca/Clemson bus service has greatly affected my ability to live a fulfilling life. My doctors’ offices, as well as the location where I donate platelets every two weeks — a vital contribution to saving lives — are both located in Seneca, while I reside in Clemson. Without this bus service, I’m unable to do the things I love and value so deeply, even if it’s not free.

Public transportation is more than just a convenience; for many like myself, it’s a lifeline. The Seneca/Clemson bus was not just a means of getting from point A to point B, but a crucial connection between two communities. It provided accessibility to healthcare, work, education, and volunteer opportunities, fostering independence for those who can't drive, like the elderly and the disabled.

The termination of this service has left many individuals stranded and isolated, affecting their ability to attend medical appointments, participate in community activities, and maintain their daily routines. According to the American Public Transportation Association, each year, public transport in the US prevents 450 million gallons of fuel from being burned, which saves 37 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Reinstating the Seneca/Clemson bus would not only restore mobility to many but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Approximately 30% of households in South Carolina do not have adequate access to personal vehicles. This highlights the critical need for reliable public transit options. A revitalized bus service can help bridge the gap, promote equity, and enhance the quality of life for residents of both Seneca and Clemson.

We call on local government officials and transportation authorities to reinstate the Seneca/Clemson bus service with immediate consideration. This action will profoundly benefit the community, ensuring that all residents can access essential services and enjoy the freedom that many take for granted.

Please lend your support by signing this petition to bring back this vital service for those who need it the most.
