The Issue

Living in the peaceful area of Farmington, New Mexico, our community treasures the natural beauty that surrounds us. However, my family and I, along with many of our neighbors, have been plagued by a relentless problem: unauthorized motorized vehicles trespassing on both private and Department of Wildlife (DOW) state land directly behind our homes.

These motorized vehicles not only invade our peace and privacy, but they also cause significant damage to the natural habitat. The land that offers a sanctuary to various wildlife species is slowly being eroded and torn apart by the continuous onslaught of engines and tires. It takes years to cultivate and maintain a flourishing ecosystem, but only moments to undo all of that progress through mindless destruction.

Our concerns go beyond personal irritation or inconvenience. The noise disrupts the tranquility that brought us to this region in the first place, but more importantly, the fragile ecosystem is put at risk. According to studies from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, off-road vehicles can cause severe soil erosion and vegetation loss, significantly altering habitats that local wildlife depends upon.

Farmington is a vital area in the desert landscape—home not only to a rich cultural history but also various species of flora and fauna that thrive in these lands. The San Juan County Commission has an opportunity to act decisively by imposing restrictions on motorized vehicles on private and DOW state lands. Such restrictions will protect the environment and maintain the integrity of our neighborhoods.

Implementing a clear, enforceable regulation will provide a practical solution. We propose the installation of clear signage and barriers on affected properties, an increased patrolling presence by local law enforcement or state officials, and stringent fines for violators. It’s crucial that both public and private lands be monitored appropriately to ensure rules are adhered to, creating a safe and serene space for both residents and wildlife.

Protecting our lands isn’t just about preserving our local beauty; it’s about respecting and caring for the home we all share. We are calling on community members, environmentalists, and local lawmakers to join us in this fight to guard our environmental resources.

Sign this petition to help preserve the natural beauty and peace of Farmington by advocating for an immediate restriction on unauthorized motorized vehicles across our beloved private and DOW state lands. Together, we can make a substantial difference.
