There is no reason why aircraft can not fly a little higher, or over less densely populated areas and thus less noisy!
Aircraft are not currently permitted to fly over the centre of Bishops Stortford but they are allowed to fly over the centre of Harlow. They are not allowed to fly over Sawbridgeworth and Stansted Mountfitchet at heights below 2,500ft but they can fly over Harlow and other surrounding villages at 2,000ft, unless we push to implement similar operational restrictions.
I do not believe that it is safe for large aircraft to fly just 1700 ft above our Schools, Hospitals and Houses.
The last noise survey conducted by Stansted Airport in Harlow was a decade ago.
Stansted Airport continues to expand, however, they are ill-equipt to do so as they do not have Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) for runway 04 Approach.
Without resistance from you the airport expansion and noise annoyance levels in Harlow / Roydon and surrounding towns and villages will increase steeply over the coming months, consequently, sleep deprivation will likely increase, health will deteriorate and local property prices are likely to decline in the long term as a result.
Complaints against Stansted Airport have significantly increased over the past 12 months but no action has been taken to remedy the issues.
A recent consultation on night flights at Stansted has been issued, which will probably result in increased aircraft movement / noise levels to local residents. This is particularly true for freight flights in the early hours.
Stansted Airport do not have sophisticated Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) on runway 04 which assists in bringing aircraft down steeper and thus less noisy. As a result, aircraft are permitted / encouraged (unnecessarily) to fly over densely populated areas of Harlow and surrounding villages at level flights of approx 1,600ft above the residential properties, the Town Centre and the Hospital well before the runway (and accepting ILS ), which is dangerous.
Due to absence of decibel readers in Harlow and outdated noise abatement surveys, aircraft noise is only checked at the boundaries of the runway. Therefore, loud aircraft are permitted over Harlow / Roydon continuously, every 2 minutes at peak times, including night flights in the early hours, without regard for residents legal rights.
The introduction of operational restrictions to route the bulk of aircraft away from Harlow Town Centre, the Hospital and Train Station and to increase the minimum altitude to 3,000ft should not be too difficult, expensive or burdensome, however, it would result in significantly improved noise levels, air pollution and well-being of local residents.
Local MP rt Hon Robert Halfon MP has been asked to intervene on behalf of local residents, however, he is not interested. Harlow Health & Safety wash their hands on the issue, the self-regulated aircraft industry ignore the complaints and feel the general public are happy with the current situation and only the minority complain.
With sufficient names on the petition, the government will be forced to take note and react.
