Restrict Internet Access for Convicted Child Sex Offenders in the UK
Restrict Internet Access for Convicted Child Sex Offenders in the UK
The Issue
I am deeply moved to start this petition due to personal experience of child grooming. This issue affects parents, guardians, and communities across the UK, and it is a matter we need to address urgently. Child sex offenses are a heinous crime with life-long repercussions for the victims. It is essential to take the necessary measures to protect our children and ensure they grow in a safe environment.
In England and Wales alone, child sex offenses recorded by police have more than doubled in the past five years, with approximately 73,518 registered in 2018-19 (NSPCC). These startling numbers only highlight the need to place restrictions on such offenders after they have served their time in jail.
Currently, a loophole in UK law allows convicted child sex offenders to access the Internet on mobile devices once they are released from prison. This accessibility opens up a disturbing possibility: potential re-offending or even child grooming online. My petition is to urge the UK government to modify the law so that convicted child sex offenders are denied Internet access on mobile devices within their homes following their release from incarceration.
Moreover, convicted child sex offenders should not have the option of moving abroad unchecked, where they could potentially continue their cycle of abuse. Therefore, I propose restrictions on emigration for these offenders to prevent further harm in other nations.
We must take a united stand protecting the most vulnerable among us. By taking these steps, we will significantly reduce the opportunities for convicted child sex offenders to re-offend or take their crimes to other shores. This is about more than just a change in legislation, it's about giving our children the chance to grow up safe and with peace of mind. Please, sign the petition and help us protect our children's future.
