Restrict Fireworks Sales to Public and Limit Use to Organised Events Only
The Issue
As a pet owner, I've experienced the distress that fireworks can cause. My dog suffers from severe anxiety triggered by fireworks. Despite trying everything, including prescribed medication from the vet, nothing seems to alleviate her fear. It's heartbreaking to see your beloved pet go through such distress and feel helpless about it.
I am not alone in this struggle; many other pet owners share my experience during firework season. According to a study by PDSA, 40% of dog owners report their pets are afraid of fireworks (PDSA PAW Report 2018). This fear can lead not only to emotional distress but also physical harm as pets try desperately to escape the noise.
Fireworks are not just a problem for pets but also for wildlife and humans alike. The RSPCA reports that every year they receive approximately 2,300 calls about firework related issues around Guy Fawkes night (RSPCA). Moreover, according to NHS data in England alone there were 4,506 hospital admissions for injuries caused by fireworks in 2014/15 (NHS).
Therefore, we propose limiting the sale of fireworks strictly for organised events on one designated night per year - Firework Night only. This change will significantly reduce the prolonged stress on our pets while still allowing us all to enjoy these spectacular displays safely and responsibly.
Please support this petition if you believe in creating an environment where everyone - including our furry friends - can live without unnecessary anxiety or harm caused by excessive use of fireworks.
