M Simpson started this petition to Trudy Harrison (Copeland MP)

The impact of fireworks to animals in built up residential areas is upsetting. Fireworks start in the run up to 5th November and last days beyond. Animals suffer not only psychological effects from the unexpected loud bang but physical injuries from the attempt to run and hide from the noise and flashing light. The devastating effect this has to the lives of household pets and wildlife is devastating. Many animals suffering with the lasting effects for weeks after the 5th November.

Statistics show 62% of dogs, 54% of cats and 55% of horses show signs of distress during fireworks. The British Horse Society reports 20 deaths, 10 severe injuries, and 88 mild to moderate injuries in horses in fireworks incidents since 2010. Many hedgehogs make homes under bonfires and when they’re lit, sadly they’re burnt alive. Thousands of animals are affected by unplanned private firework displays (credit: RSPCA).

I’m petitioning on behalf of the animals and the animal owners. Seeing your pet in distress is also damaging and upsetting. I’m asking for fireworks to be limited for controlled use only i.e. to organised displays and restricted for use only on the 5th November.
