Restrict firework times to protect animals
The Issue
Every year, countless cats, dogs, and wildlife suffer in silence from the sudden, unpredictable blasts of fireworks. These loud explosions meant for human amusement can cause severe stress and trauma to animals. As someone who runs Carrie’s Cats Community Rescue, I witness firsthand the fear fireworks cause. Cats go missing, hide for days, or come back injured and traumatized. I've spent many nights searching for terrified strays and comforting rescue cats who shiver under blankets. For them, fireworks aren’t a spectacle; they’re terrifying explosions.
Pet owners report that many pets shake, hide, stop eating, or even run away in terror during fireworks season. Studies have shown that animals can suffer from increased heart rate, disorientation, and even psychological damage. Wild animals abandon nests, birds fly into danger, leading to an increase in lost and injured animals needing rescue care. In fact, animal rescue centers see a significant rise in distress calls after fireworks displays.
To safeguard our pets and local wildlife, I am calling for a restriction on the times fireworks can be legally set off. By limiting fireworks to specific dates and times, we can provide a more predictable environment for animals and allow pet owners to take necessary precautions. For example, Guy Fawkes Night could be scheduled between 7 pm and 10 pm, with proper advance announcements, so pet owners can prepare effectively.
This petition is crucial not just for cats or dogs but for all wildlife vulnerable to these disturbances. Together, we can create a safer environment for our beloved animals. Please sign this petition to push for a change in how we celebrate, ensuring that our festivities don't come at the cost of our animal friends’ wellbeing.
