The Issue

As an avid UFC fan and someone who has conducted extensive research on fighter safety, I am deeply concerned about the dangerous practices of extreme weight cutting prevalent in the sport today. Extreme weight cutting poses significant risks to the health and wellbeing of fighters, often leading to severe dehydration, impaired performance, and long-term health issues such as kidney damage and hormonal imbalances. As fans, we revel in the thrill of combat sports, yet it is imperative that we balance our passion with the responsibility of ensuring fighter safety.

A practical and effective solution to curb these extreme practices is the implementation of same-day weigh-ins along with hydration testing. By enforcing same-day weigh-ins, it eliminates the window for rapid weight loss through unsafe methods right before the fight, which often result in fighters competing in a physically compromised state. Hydration testing can further ensure that fighters are at optimal physical health, by making sure they have rehydrated adequately and are not risking severe dehydration.

There is precedent for adopting such measures; other martial arts competitions, such as ONE Championship, have successfully implemented similar protocols, seeing positive outcomes reflected in fighter health and fairness in competition. By taking proactive steps to safeguard the athletes, the UFC has the opportunity to set a gold standard in fighter safety and integrity in sports.

The UFC must acknowledge the mounting evidence and growing public concern around fighter health, and take definitive action to implement policies that prioritize their safety, starting with same-day weigh-ins and hydration checks. We call upon Dana White, the President of the UFC, alongside sanctioning bodies and athletic commissions, to make these necessary changes in regulation immediately.

Fighter safety should never be compromised for any reason; it is time for the UFC to lead by example in ensuring their athletes compete in the safest environment possible. Sign this petition to demand immediate action and to protect the wellbeing of our fighters, ensuring a safer and fairer future for the sport we all love.
