The recent experiences of lengthy election seasons have led to the realization of an unhealthy intrusion into our daily lives. The ever-lasting campaigns for presidential, senate, and house of representatives seats seemed to have spanned over two years - a period that we believe is excessively long.
Indeed, these protracted campaigns not only drain resources but also shift focus from governing to campaigning. Studies show that long campaign periods can create political fatigue amongst the population leading to decreased engagement (Source: Pew Research Center). Furthermore, the financial implications of these extensive campaigns are massive. The 2020 presidential campaign alone saw spending of approximately $14 billion, more than double the money spent in the 2016 race (Source: Center for Responsive Politics). Such immense amounts could be directed towards education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Moreover, other democratic countries, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, have strict laws that limit their national election campaigns to a few weeks. Yet, their democracy thrives.
Therefore, we call for a concrete change – limiting the campaign duration of presidential, senate, and US representative elections to six months.
