Restoring Trust in The Indian Election Process

Restoring Trust in The Indian Election Process
The Issue
Petition to Ensure Trust in Indian Election Results through Re-checking and Cross-Verification of Votes
We, the undersigned citizens and voters of India, respectfully submit this petition to the Election Commission of India, calling for a critical enhancement to the election process to safeguard the trust in the integrity of Indian democracy.
Objective:
We request that the final election results in any constituency be declared only after conducting a thorough rechecking and cross-verification of the following three sources:
- Total votes cast in each booth and constituency as recorded by the polling officers.
- Votes polled in favor of each candidate as verified through the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips.
- Records of votes in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Rationale:
Trust and respect for any system is built through cross-checking—particularly so in the electoral system— built on the pillars of transparency, accountability, and verification. Cross-checking and rechecking are essential measures to ensure that no manipulation, tampering, or error in the election process goes unnoticed. As custodians of the democratic process, it is imperative that you reinforce this system with stringent checks to secure its reliability, integrity. and trustworthiness.
Why Cross-Verification is Crucial:
Preventing manipulation and tampering: Without a robust mechanism for checking and cross-checking, we cannot fully guarantee that the results reflect the true will of the people. By comparing the total number of votes cast with the EVM records and VVPAT slips, discrepancies, if any, will be identified and addressed.
Building public confidence: When the election results are backed by multiple independent verifications, it enhances the trust of the voters in the outcome and the credibility of the Election Commission of India.
Fostering respect for the winning candidate: A verified election result, free from doubts of manipulation, will ensure that the elected candidate commands genuine respect from all sections of society.
Strengthening Indian democracy: A transparent, accountable electoral system bolstered by cross-verification safeguards the health of our democracy, ensuring that the true will of the people is represented.
Our Request:
We, therefore, urge the Election Commission of India to:
Implement a mandatory cross-checking mechanism that cross-verifies the number of total votes, VVPAT slips, and EVM records in each polling booth and constituency before declaring results. Ensure that any discrepancies found during the cross-verification process are transparently addressed and resolved.
This petition is for the good of all—voters, candidates, political parties, Election Commission of India and the democratic process itself.
We believe that introducing these multiple checks will not only enhance respect for the Election Commission of India but also solidify the democratic foundation of our nation.
We kindly request the Election Commission of India to consider this petition seriously and take prompt action to ensure that the will and the choices of the citizen of India is protected through a transparent and accountable election process.
