Restoring The Northgate Shopping Center Sign In Aurora,IL
The Issue
The Northgate Shopping Center is located in Aurora, IL. It was built by Mr. Harry Stoner (December 20,1905-March 28,1976). In 1946, Mr. Stoner purchased the property with the unique idea of building a shopping center that would be "a center for every reason and every season". At it's peak, the Northgate Shopping Center had 52 stores occupying an estimated 500,000 square feet.
The Stoner family worked to make the property a place to be by working on the landscaping, handling maintenance of the property, and even sweeping the parking lot on a routine basis. Harry Stoner was known as the "father of Lake Street" because of his efforts to promote the property as the "golden mile" of the City of Aurora. It is not just a shopping center, It is a family legacy of a man who envisioned bringing something new to the City of Aurora.
The Northgate Sign was constructed in 1956 and has proudly stood on Lake Street for 67 years. It is a piece of nostalgia of what the Northgate Shopping Center once was. The "S" in the the iconic sign comes from Mr. Stoner's last name. This Petition is for all the residents, community members, and people impacted by the Northgate Sign who believe the City of Aurora and current property owners should do everything possible to save the history of the sign and restore it for future generations to enjoy.
