Restoring Organized Recreation to the Hendricks/Kendall Recreation Center

Restoring Organized Recreation to the Hendricks/Kendall Recreation Center
The Issue
The Hendricks/Kendall Recreation Center has always held a special place in our hearts. Over the years, it has served as a safe haven and a positive centerpiece in Portsmouth, particularly for the communities of Douglas Park, Truxton, Arcadia Heights, and Maplewood Park. This center provided an invaluable environment that catalyzed early development stages of many of our current leaders and continues to empower youth through its programs. However, recent years have witnessed a decline in its organization and services.
Through this petition, we are collectively sending a plea to restore and expand the recreational services offered at the Hendricks/Kendall Recreation Center. Communities thrive when their public spaces are well-maintained and offer ample opportunity for youth engagement. The National Recreation and Park Association states that well-managed recreational facilities lead to decreased youth delinquency and increased academic performance (NRPA, 2017). The revival of this center would undoubtedly bring these benefits back to our communities.
Moreover, we wish to emphasize the importance of organizing numerous recreational activities through this center. A variety of programs can cater to different interests, fostering inclusivity and creativity among our young population.
The potential rekindling and extension of services within the Hendricks/Kendall Recreation Center goes beyond recreation; it is an investment in the future of our communities and the youth who signify this future. Please sign the petition to amplify our message and revive this beloved community anchor.
