This letter is from Wendy Hunt:
"I write to express my despair, irritation and outrage at the current library debacle. From my perspective as a library patron in both Penetanguishene and Midland, the system in place was working fine. Tiny Township folks could be members at the Penetang, Midland or Springwater libraries with very little hassle. In fact, it was only recently that Tiny Township folks could, once again, have a membership in both Penetang and Midland libraries. Only politicians involved in a power struggle could screw that up.
As I understand it, Tiny Council will meet November 14th in a closed session (for what reason escapes me) to determine how patrons of the above named libraries will be reimbursed for the money that we will have to pay to the library we decide to support. All I see is a bureaucratic nightmare. How that serves the folks of Tiny that you were elected to serve eludes me. Mind you, I also don't understand how this power struggle between Tiny and Penetanguishene serves the public either. Libraries are the heart of communities large or small. They offer services available to a wide array of people across age/class/gender/race. They also provide refuge in many ways. The point is, access to libraries should be made as easy as possible. Asking me to fork out in excess of $200 cash to the Midland Public Library for instance, does not do that. Then telling me I have to go to the Township Office to recoup that does not do that either. Taking that off my taxes does not do that. Nor does it help folks with the many limiting situations they are experiencing these days. Surely a literate population is a benefit to all and easy access to the services that facilitate that is required.
I've been told this power struggle between Tiny and Penetanguishene is a done deal and folks have given up protesting. From my perspective, it does not need to be a done deal. Common sense could prevail; Tiny Council could reverse their decision and support a literate population. We do not need a library in Tiny to serve Tiny. Use the money for something that actually needs the resources. Springwater, Penetanguishene and Midland all have excellent libraries. Choosing to support them is in line with what I recall of the pre-election rhetoric - we need to be kind, generous, cooperative; supportive and get along. I urge you to postpone all further decisions regarding this matter until public input is heard and respected.
Hoping for common sense and commitment to cooperation"
