The Issue

I am a 9th grader at Franklin High, and a former FMS student. I first transferred to the middle school on December 2, 2024, my first band class being the next day. The only thing i remember from that day was the determination, and in a way, kindness, that I was shown by the wonderful Mr. Roberts. That day was when I discovered I was within the best of the best for our age, having a sense of prestige. That year and the year after has shown me nothing but growth, new relationships, love, hate, and most of all:  The undying passion for art.

In a world where technology has taken over the arts, colonizing them and destroying the humanity and purpose behind their creation, it is IMPERATIVE we maintain tradition of upholding those who are the future of music, art, and dance. We have to prove that technology will not compare to the passion that is in creativity, and what better way to do it than reinstating the same programs that shape our children into people who can think for themselves and follow their dreams?

The honors programs are NOT unoccupied or of low enrollment either, last year FMS Honors Band donned an astounding 67 performers. FMS Orchestra and Chorus also had an enormous enrollment, Honors Chorus having two different class periods. This further proves that the future generation DOES have aspiring artists willing to hone their craft.

In addition, these programs have been around and effective for longer than many students have been alive, maybe even some of our parents as well. These ensembles have a reputation, through awards and through adjudications. Taking these programs away strips the school of something to take pride in.

I made this petition thinking about my now 7th and 8th grader friends, who deserve to be a part of an ensemble where we support and  actually complement each others' skills. I am now also thinking about the future 6th graders, who are either continuing from elementary, or only beginning their journeys. Whoever they are, they warrant their respective advanced ensembles. This is for the woodwinds, the brass, and the percussion. This is for the altos, sopranos, tenors, baritones, and basses. This is for the violas, violins, cellos, and double basses. This is for the choreographers, dance captains, and everyday dancers. I see you, I care about you, and your talent warrants the return of these groups. Our community knows that the music program is strong, as half of them have been through it. Bring the honors groups back, and show them just how strong you are!
