It is necessary for us as citizens to revisit the national legal drinking age. Currently, the United States has one of the highest legal drinking ages in the world at 21. This is in stark contrast to many other countries where the legal drinking age is 18, including Mexico, Canada (18 or 19 depending on province), and numerous European countries. This petition isn't about promoting unhealthy behaviors; it's about questioning whether our current laws are proportionate and fair, particularly given 18-year-olds can legally vote, marry, serve in the military and undertake other adult responsibilities. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 has resulted in a decrease in alcohol-related driving fatalities, but it has also driven underage drinking into private and less controlled environments, increasing the dangers of intoxication and accidents.
