Restore the Traditional Route of the Philadelphia New Year's Day Mummer Parade

The Issue

As a local member of the community tied to the rich and vibrant history of Philadelphia, the traditional New Year's Day Mummer Parade holds a special place in my heart, and in the hearts of many Philadelphians. This relatively simple event is deeply engraved in our traditions. The parade has its roots in South Philadelphia's area known as "The Neck,” and it is here where the parade should start as it did in the past.

Over the years, the chosen route for the parade has changed multiple times. However, the real essence of the historic parade lies in its origins, its act of departing from Oregon Avenue in South Philly to conclude in Center City. This was how we marked the start of each fresh year, a path that stitched together our past and present.

Route changes not only disrupt the historical nature of the parade, but also affect the local economies that thrive during the festive season. Local businesses have historically recorded a spike in sales, seeing up to a 25% increase in revenue as per the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, thanks to the crowds drawn by the parade.

Given what is at stake, it is essential that we stand up to restore the starting point of the historic Philadelphia New Year's Day Mummer Parade back to South Philly, honoring our heritage, supporting local businesses, and passing on this tradition to future generations.

Please sign this petition to ask the Philadelphia City Council to restore the traditional route of the Philadelphia New Year's Day Mummer Parade from South Philadelphia to Center City. Don't let our local traditions fade away. Stand up to preserve our culture today.
