Restore the Right to Use Food as a Reward in Classrooms
The Issue
As a student in West Valley 208 School District, WA, I was settling into class one day when my teacher announced that she could no longer distribute food as a reward. The school board had tightened regulations around food in classrooms, stripping us of an enriching learning tool.
Food rewards can be an effective motivator for students. According to research from the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, tangible rewards like snacks can significantly improve student engagement and academic performance (USC Rossier). However, our local school board has decided to overlook these benefits.
This policy change not only affects our motivation but also robs us of the joy and excitement that comes with earning a treat for hard work. It is not just about the food; it's about recognizing effort and achievement in a way that resonates with us students.
We understand the importance of keeping our classrooms clean and protecting from allergens, but as students a small food reward can be really helpful, it gives us a feeling inside of us like we accomplished something.
We urge the West Valley 208 School Board to reconsider this decision and restore our right to enrich learning through food rewards. Please sign this petition if you agree that we should have access to all tools available for effective education.
