Our democratic system thrives on interaction between citizens and their elected officials. A significant part of this interaction has always occurred at the legislative breakfast, where ordinary citizens had the opportunity to personally approach an open mic and pose their questions to the legislature. While the work of the chamber of commerce to facilitate these breakfasts is appreciated, recent changes have turned this process to a more restrictive one where questions are prescreened. The current format undermines the spirit of open dialogue, and even denies the chance for follow-up questions if a response is unclear or incomplete. In the past, the interactive format of the legislative breakfast allowed legislators to engage and connect with the concerns of constituents, which undoubtedly leads to more responsive governance.  Therefore, in the interest of robust democratic dialogue and accountable governance, it is imperative we return the legislative breakfast to its original format. Preserving our democratic engagement is pivotal. Sign this petition to  call for reestablishing a format that supports our right to address our representatives directly.  We also ask that future breakfasts be scheduled later in the morning to better accommodate working families as 7am is often too early to secure child care on a Saturday.
