Restore the Memorial at Plano Senior High School – Honor Those We've Lost
The Issue
We, the students, alumni, parents, staff, and community members of Plano Senior High School, call on Plano ISD to commit to designing and installing a new, permanent memorial to replace the one removed during the school's ongoing remodel with no announced plans for replacement.
PERSONAL STORIES
My Story
My brother, Gabriel Rabah, passed away on November 4th, 2016. His name was placed on the memorial wall at Plano Senior High School a tribute that meant everything to our family. That wall was not just a structure. It was a place we could visit, reflect, and feel connected to Gabriel. Knowing his name was honored there brought comfort during an unimaginable time of grief.
Leslie Cherryholmes Story:
My son Evan Johnson was a Junior at PSHS when he died in December 2014. At the time, the student council added his plaque to the Plano Senior High School memorial garden. Nearby, his friends and family raised money to plant a beautiful tree and placed a large stone with a plaque that read, "Don't be afraid to live life." Over the years, that tree grew tall and beautiful, just like my Evan-but now, it has been completely destroyed. While the garden, plaques, and trees provided immense comfort to those of us who loved Evan, I was also so happy knowing that the students passing by his tree each day were given that daily encouragement to "live life.”
When the remodel began and the memorial was taken down without any plan to replace it, that comfort was taken with it. For our family, and for every family who lost someone remembered on that wall, the silence from the school district has been deeply painful.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Memorials at schools serve as lasting tributes to students, staff, and alumni who have passed. They are central to a school community's identity, shared history, and collective healing. Removing a memorial without a replacement plan erases a meaningful piece of the school's heritage and dishonors those it was built to remember.
OUR DEMANDS
We respectfully demand that Plano ISD:
- Publicly acknowledge the removal of the original memorial.
- Form a community committee including students, alumni, and affected families to guide the design of a new memorial.
- Commit to a clear timeline and dedicated funding for a permanent replacement.
- Ensure the new memorial is prominently placed on the renovated campus.
Please sign this petition and stand with the families who deserve to see their loved ones honored permanently and with dignity.
